Lobby facade, Subconscious Spa, Shanghai

Subconscious Day Spa is a merging of art forms, an oscillation between design and painting to expand our creativity. We drew design inspiration from the hand scroll “Nine Dragons” painted by Chen Rong in 1244. In his painting, apparitions of nine dragons fly amongst clouds and mountains but never appear as fully visible creatures, suggesting the role of spiritual guardians of this natural space. Inspired by the power and majesty of these ethereal beings, we placed glimpses of a dragon throughout the trapezoidal lobby, as though soaring throughout each corner of the spa. The head of the dragon appears high above the reception, watching over the glass entryway that leads to the internal pathways. The three-dimensional representation of this dragon painting, along with the symmetrical positioning of the two doorways, the tilted walls, and the mirror- imaged design shelving, further elicit a feeling of profound presence, as if summoning this divine being into our human lives.

The pathways to each treatment room use a dark monochromatic palette, evoking a space out of time. There are two distinct paths, designed to reflect one’s emotional state before and after intimate treatments. The arrival path explores a more lively combination of sensory lighting with a miniature organic landscape garden. The departure path embodies a minimal use of textured material, bringing out a sense of simplicity and peace. As one passes through the dark pathways into each treatment room, the mood transforms to a softer, brighter mode, signaling an arrival into a new realm.

In the center of each treatment room, we placed the focus on works of original art by the designer herself. Each art piece, painted with ink and watercolor on unconventional rice paper, depicts a pure intensity of organic gesture and movement reflecting the spa’s dragon guardian spirit.
